Frequently Asked Questions

What's the history of the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail?

The Coastal Trail runs along the path of the Southern Pacific Railroad's Monterey Branch, which was built in 1879. Southern Pacific's longest running passenger train, the Del Monte, ran on these tracks until 1971. In 1986, the Coastal Conservancy joined with Pacific Grove, Monterey, and Seaside to transform the abandoned railway into the parkland it is today.
