National Steinbeck Center: Salinas, CA's Native Son, Celebrated

The National Steinbeck Center pays tribute to Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck, whose birthplace now hosts the Steinbeck Museum. Salinas, California's favorite son is celebrated with artifacts, books, and film clips. The John Steinbeck Exhibition Hall presents interactive, multi-sensory exhibits for all ages, along with seven theaters themed after books such as East of Eden, Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath. The Steinbeck Center also includes ever-changing art and cultural exhibits in multiple gallery spaces.

    The National Steinbeck Center includes the John Steinbeck Exhibition hall, which brings to life classic books like East of Eden, Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath, through themed theaters that add context and insight to these famous works. Artifacts, photography, art and video are just part of the multi-sensory, interactive exhibits presented, along with an ever-changing gallery of art and cultural exhibits.
  • Did John Steinbeck Really Live Here?

    John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902, and grew up in a Victorian home that still stands, today as a restaurant. Growing up in this prosperous, bustling farming town and trading center left an imprint on Steinbeck, who lived here until attending Stanford University in 1919. Books like East of Eden and Cannery Row carried with them the sense of place that Salinas instilled upon him.
